Take Your Time When Choosing Art

Buying an original painting is a very personal decision, and there is no need to follow a strict formula. You may initially be searching for a particular colour, size or subject, only to discover that a completely different painting captures your attention. That emotional response matters.

A painting will often remain in your home much longer than many pieces of furniture or decoration. Choosing something that continues to interest you is therefore more important than simply following current interior trends.

Look closely at the composition, colours, brushwork and overall feeling of the artwork. Consider where you might display it, but also ask yourself a very simple question:

Would I enjoy seeing this painting every day?
If the answer is yes, you may have found the right piece.

Where Can Original Oil Paintings Be Displayed?

Original oil paintings are not limited to living rooms. A large statement painting can create an impressive first impression in an entrance hall. Landscapes can bring a sense of calm to bedrooms and offices. Still life paintings can add warmth to dining areas, while portraits can create character in hallways, libraries and feature spaces.

Original paintings can also be used in commercial interiors, including offices, reception areas, restaurants and other spaces where artwork helps create atmosphere and identity.

The key is to consider the relationship between the artwork, the wall and the surrounding environment. Sometimes a single large painting is all a room needs. In other situations, several smaller paintings can be arranged together to create a more layered and collected appearance.

The Importance of Viewing an Oil Painting in Person

Online browsing is a convenient way to discover artwork, but original oil paintings are best appreciated in person whenever possible. Photographs cannot always fully reproduce the texture, brushwork and depth of colour found in an oil painting.

Lighting also makes a significant difference. A painting may reveal subtle details when viewed from different angles or under different lighting conditions.

Seeing an artwork in person also allows you to appreciate its true scale. Measurements such as 80 cm or 100 cm can be difficult to visualise on a phone screen, particularly when choosing artwork for a large wall. For buyers looking for original oil paintings in Singapore, visiting a local gallery therefore provides an opportunity to experience the artwork more closely before deciding which piece feels right.

Think About Colour – But Don’t Match Everything

Many people begin their search for artwork by looking for colours that match their sofa, curtains or furniture. Colour is certainly important, but a painting does not need to match every element of the room perfectly.

In fact, introducing a contrasting or unexpected colour through artwork can make an interior more interesting. A room with neutral furniture, for example, can be transformed by a painting with richer colours. Conversely, an interior that already contains strong colours may benefit from artwork with a softer and more restrained palette.

It can be helpful to look for one or two colours within a painting that relate naturally to the surrounding interior rather than trying to match everything exactly. Most importantly, choose a painting because you enjoy looking at it. Furniture and interior trends may change over time, but a painting you genuinely love can remain with you for many years.

Choosing the Right Size Oil Painting

The size of a painting can have almost as much impact as the artwork itself. A beautiful painting that is too small for a large wall may appear isolated, while a very large painting in a small space can overwhelm the surrounding furniture.

Before choosing a painting, consider the dimensions of the wall as well as the furniture beneath or around it. For example, a painting displayed above a sofa, console or dining table should feel visually connected to the furniture rather than appearing too small in comparison.

Large walls and rooms with higher ceilings can often accommodate substantial paintings particularly well. A large original oil painting can become the main visual feature of the room and may reduce the need for multiple smaller decorative pieces.

Smaller paintings can be equally effective when displayed in more intimate spaces or arranged thoughtfully with other artworks. The objective is not simply to find a painting that physically fits the wall, but one that feels appropriately proportioned to the entire room.

Choosing a Painting That Suits Your Interior

There is no single style of painting that works for every home. The best choice depends on the atmosphere you want to create, the colours already present in your interior and, most importantly, your own personal taste.

A European-inspired portrait can introduce elegance and character into a room. Portraits can work particularly well in entrance halls, living rooms, libraries and feature areas where the artwork can command attention.

Landscape paintings can create a very different feeling. Scenes of countryside, coastlines, cities, rivers or architecture can bring a sense of openness and tranquillity into an interior. They are particularly versatile and can complement both traditional and contemporary spaces.

Still life paintings can add warmth and richness to dining rooms, kitchens, living areas and smaller feature walls. Floral arrangements, fruit, objects and decorative compositions can introduce colour without dominating the room.

Abstract and more expressive paintings can work especially well in contemporary interiors, where colour, movement and composition may be more important than the subject itself.

At Palazzo Arte Galleria, our collection includes portrait paintings, landscape paintings, still life paintings, abstract paintings and a selection of European and European-inspired oil paintings. Rather than limiting the collection to one particular style, we look for paintings with beauty, personality and presence.

Original Oil Painting or Printed Reproduction?

When purchasing artwork, it is useful to understand the difference between an original hand-painted oil painting and a printed reproduction. An original oil painting is painted by hand, with oil paint applied directly to a surface such as canvas. When examined closely, it may show variations in brushwork, texture and paint application.

A printed reproduction, on the other hand, reproduces an existing image through a printing process. Some modern reproductions can be extremely detailed and may even have textured finishes added to imitate brushstrokes. Both can serve decorative purposes, but they are fundamentally different products.

At Palazzo Arte Galleria, our focus is on original paintings, including oil on canvas, selected for their visual appeal, character and ability to enhance an interior.

Why Choose an Original Oil Painting

One of the greatest appeals of an original oil painting is that every piece is individual. Oil paint has been used by artists for centuries because of its richness, depth and versatility. Depending on the artist and painting technique, the surface may reveal visible brushstrokes, delicate layers of colour, textured areas or subtle transitions of light and shadow.

When viewed in person, these details can give an oil painting a depth and presence that is difficult to fully capture in a photograph. An original painting also brings individuality to an interior. While printed wall art may be reproduced many times, a hand-painted artwork carries the variations and characteristics created by the artist’s hand.

For many homeowners, this is what makes living with original art particularly enjoyable. The painting becomes more than decoration; it becomes part of the personality of the home.
